Electron Trapping in Magnetic Mirror Structures at the Edge of Magnetopause Flux Ropes

چکیده
Flux ropes are a proposed site for particle energization during magnetic reconnection, with several mechanisms proposed. Here, Magnetospheric Multiscale mission observations of mirror structures on the edge two ion-scale magnetopause flux presented. Donut-shaped features in electron pitch angle distributions provide evidence trapping structures. Furthermore, both events show extended 3D structure along body rope. Potential formation mechanisms, such as instability, examined and evolutionary states compared. Pressure force analysis suggest that could an important acceleration mechanism ropes, reconnection more generally.

Chaos in magnetic flux ropes
Magnetic flux ropes immersed in a uniform magnetoplasma are observed to twist about themselves, writhe about each other and rotate about a central axis. They are kink unstable and smash into one another as they move. Each collision results in magnetic field line reconnection and the generation of a quasi-separatrix layer. Three-dimensional magnetic field lines are computed by conditionally aver...
متن کاملSurvival of flux transfer event (FTE) flux ropes far along the tail magnetopause
[1] During intervals of southward IMF, magnetic reconnection can result in the formation of flux transfer events (FTEs) on the dayside magnetopause which travel along the magnetopause in the anti-sunward direction. Of particular interest is their fate and the role they play transporting solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere. We present the discovery of FTEs far along the distant tail magneto...

متن کاملGiant flux ropes observed in the magnetized ionosphere at Venus
[1] The Venus ionospheric response to solar and solar wind variations is most evident in its magnetic field properties. Early Pioneer Venus observations during the solar maximum revealed that the Venus ionosphere exhibits two magnetic states depending on the solar wind dynamic pressure conditions: magnetized ionosphere with large-scale horizontal magnetic field; or unmagnetized ionosphere with ...
متن کاملDual-spacecraft reconstruction of a three-dimensional magnetic flux rope at the Earth’s magnetopause
We present the first results of a data analysis method, developed by Sonnerup and Hasegawa (2011), for reconstructing three-dimensional (3-D), magnetohydrostatic structures from data taken as two closely spaced satellites traverse the structures. The method is applied to a magnetic flux transfer event (FTE), which was encountered on 27 June 2007 by at least three (TH-C, TH-D, and TH-E) of the f...
